DW: And we shall name him the Sherpa 3000.
A humanoid robot has now climbed to 20,564 feet, the summit of Ecuador's Chimborazo volcano, and the team behind the project says Mount Everest is next. A modified Unitree G1 robot named Pemba, decked out in special booties and a custom warming jacket, made the trek as part of an initiative led by a French engineer named Pablo. The robot walked autonomously through sections with less than a 30-degree incline, but was carried through the steeper parts of the grueling 16-hour climb.
At 20,564 feet, Chimborazo is taller than Denali from base to peak and is technically the point on Earth farthest from its center, due to the equatorial bulge. The project's broader goal is scientific rather than just flashy, aiming to develop humanoids capable of monitoring remote and extreme environments, such as the Amazon rainforest, where sending people is difficult or dangerous. The team's next target is Hawaii's Mauna Kea before attempting Everest.
