DW: And I thought I was bad hiding candy in the back of the toilet...
A Reddit user hosting an anonymous AMA went viral this week after revealing that he quietly won millions in the lottery 11 years ago, never told his family, and has spent the intervening years living as though he were still broke. Posting as Think-Assistance-419 on r/AMA, he described the win as surprisingly anticlimactic. His first splurge was a $48 pour of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon at a bar where nobody knew him. He said he sipped it slowly, let himself absorb the reality, and then never ordered it again, because once money was no limit, the pleasure was gone.
His most treasured purchase was a $4,000 mattress. He also owns a leather chair he lied to his mother about and an antique record player he claims came from an estate sale. He described his strategy as "boring is the play," and said that pressure from family and social circles is what financially destroys most lottery winners. He said he was sharing the story now because "it feels stupid to keep doing it alone."
