DW: Old dog....my nickname at Food Lion.
A small dog living in the French Alps could shatter the record for the oldest dog ever documented. Lazare, a continental toy spaniel, was born on December 4, 1995, according to both his microchip and the French pedigree dog register, making him over 30 years old. Twice the typical lifespan for his breed, his age has been submitted to Guinness World Records by France's Society for the Protection of Animals. If verified, Lazare would surpass Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who died in 1939 at 29 years old and has held the record ever since.
Despite arthritis, reduced vision and hearing, and a tongue that permanently hangs out of his mouth, Lazare is said to be in surprisingly good health for his age. He recently found a new home after spending 10 days at a shelter following the death of his previous owner. His new owner, Ophélie, said she adopted him simply because "there was an instant bond" and "it was unthinkable for me that he should end his life" in a shelter.
