No, Putting A Coin On Your Router Won't Improve Your Internet Performance

DW: IF you believe this, know that wasps love to be petted!

A viral tip floating around social media claims that placing a coin on top of your Wi-Fi router will boost your internet signal, and network specialists say it does nothing of the sort and could actually make things worse. Home routers work on radio frequencies where proper antenna design requires precisely tuned components, not a random piece of metal sitting on a plastic box.

The coin has no electrical connection to the router's internal circuitry, so it plays no role in how signals are sent or received. Where the trick could cause real harm is heat. Routers rely on ventilation slots to cool down, and blocking those vents can cause the device to overheat, slow down, or cut out.
