Woman Heard Voices Saying She Had A Brain Tumor...And She Did

DW: Did they give her any winning lotto numbers?

A British woman in her 40s began hearing a calm, unfamiliar voice while reading one day that introduced itself, offered to help, and provided three verifiable facts she could check to prove its sincerity. Scared that she was having a mental health crisis, she saw a doctor and was referred to a psychiatrist who diagnosed her with functional hallucinatory psychosis and prescribed antipsychotic medication. The voices briefly went away, then returned while she was on vacation, urging her to return home for medical care. They later directed her to a hospital radiology department and told her she had a brain tumor that needed to be scanned.

Her psychiatrist ordered a CT scan, initially with some resistance from colleagues, and it confirmed the voices were right: she had a tumor growing between the two hemispheres of her brain, measuring about 2.5 inches long. Surgeons removed it, and as she came out of anesthesia, the voices said goodbye and were never heard from again. She remained symptom-free for at least 12 years and periodically called her psychiatrist to wish him well. Doctors believe the tumor itself may have produced the hallucinations, or that her body's subconscious awareness of something wrong manifested as the voices.
