DW: Is it me or is life starting to turn into one big 1980's action/comedy?
A Georgia woman is suing the U.S. Marshals Service and the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office after 15 armed officers raided her home at 5 am looking for a murder suspect who had been arrested in Indiana four months earlier. The Institute for Justice filed the lawsuit on behalf of Cathy George, who says officers burst into her home in full riot gear, held her at gunpoint, and threatened to arrest her if she didn't reveal the whereabouts of Joshua Smiley, a fugitive she had never met and had no connection to. She showed them photos of her two sons to prove she wasn't hiding anyone.
After about 20 minutes, an officer told her, "I think there's been a mistake," and the group left without apologizing or explaining. Smiley had been arrested in Avon, Indiana the same week he was placed on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted list, and the Marshals had publicly announced his capture in a press release. George was diagnosed with PTSD, moved out of her apartment, and says she is still startled by loud sounds. Her lawsuit accuses officers of violating her Fourth, Fifth, and 14th Amendment rights.
