Planes Have A William Shatner Seat To Watch The Wings

DW: Shat never ends to surprise me...

They have a “wing gremlin” protocol on commercial planes, apparently. The next time you board a plane and notice a small black triangle on the wall above a window, you can thank William Shatner. Those triangles mark what airline crews unofficially call the "William Shatner Seat," a nod to the classic "Twilight Zone" episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," in which Shatner's character becomes convinced he sees a gremlin tearing apart the plane's wing during flight. The seats marked by those triangles offer an unobstructed view of the wing, and flight attendants use them to visually inspect the wing if something seems wrong during flight.

They are especially useful in winter, when crew members need to check whether ice is forming on the flaps and slats. Unlike most of the pop culture connection, the seat has a genuinely practical function, and aviation experts say it is likely to remain a standard feature regardless of new aircraft designs.
