DW: But were they brightly colored for the holiday?
An Easter egg hunt took a grim turn in Long Beach, California, on Sunday when a family discovered what appeared to be a human skull and other bones near DeForest Park and Wetlands. Officers were called to the scene around 5 pm, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office responded. Aerial footage showed brightly colored Easter eggs scattered near a partially exposed skull in the ground.
Family members told a local TV station off-camera that the remains appeared to be those of a small child, and a nearby witness said the family was visibly shaken when he encountered them shortly after the discovery. Police said details would remain limited while the investigation continues.
