DW: Hermit life is looking better and better every day.
A new scientific study has found that sharks swimming near the Bahamas have drugs in their blood, and not just trace amounts. Researchers from the Federal University of Paraná analyzed blood samples from 85 sharks near Eleuthera Island and found that nearly one-third tested positive for at least one substance, including caffeine, the painkiller acetaminophen, the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac, and in two cases, cocaine.
It’s the first time caffeine and acetaminophen have ever been detected in any shark species anywhere in the world; scientists believe the contamination most likely comes from human sewage, wastewater, and tourism activity, including divers relieving themselves in the water. Sharks with contaminated blood also showed changes in metabolic markers tied to stress and energy levels.
