High School Makes Students Get To Top Of Rock Climbing Wall To Get Diploma

DW: I smell a lot of GED's in their future...

A high school in Taiwan's Changhua County has an unusual graduation requirement: students have to climb a five-story-high rock wall to get their diplomas. The Ershui Junior High School is home to the tallest climbing wall in Taiwan, standing 49 feet high. They don’t get to graduation unprepared, though; students take six climbing lessons every week as part of the school’s curriculum.

The school says the challenge builds focus, balance, and physical coordination. Interest in the school's program has grown since climber Alex Honnold's recent free solo climb of Taipei 101 brought attention to extreme climbing on the island. Students reportedly love the challenge, and some even climb with their parents in their free time.
