DW: Fence mending cows, now there's a million dollar idea!
A pet cow in Austria has become the first of her kind to be caught using a tool. Veronika, a Swiss brown cow, figured out on her own how to pick up a broom and use it to scratch herself. Scientists who studied her found she even picks which end of the broom to use depending on where she wants to scratch.
For thick skin on her back, she uses the brush end. For more sensitive spots like her belly, she uses the smooth handle. The researchers say this shows cows may have hidden problem-solving skills that come out when they live in more interesting environments. Veronika has been doing this for about nine years without any training.
