Folk remedies shouldn’t always be trusted, a lesson a man in China has now learned. The 23-year-old man needed emergency surgery after he put a live leech into his bladder. The man, known only as Zheng, found a folk remedy online that claimed a leech could have "miraculous effects," so he bought one and inserted the 5-centimeter-long bloodsucker through his urethra.
Big mistake. The leech crawled into his bladder, attached to the walls, and started releasing chemicals that prevent blood from clotting. The pain was intense, he couldn't urinate, and had to rush to the hospital. Doctors were stunned when he told them what happened, but an ultrasound confirmed the leech was inside him. Surgeons removed it, and Zheng could pee normally again.
