Man Gets Two World Records For Swimming Around Manhattan In Handcuffs

DW: Is there a world record for not giving a .....what?

A 49-year-old New Yorker named Michael Moreau set two Guinness World Records in September by swimming around Manhattan in handcuffs. He completed the 28.5-mile loop in nine hours, 41 minutes, and 46 seconds, becoming the first and, by definition, the fastest person to swim around the city's waterways while wearing shackles. Moreau got the idea after completing the Molokai Channel swim and wanted to try something new.

He figured out that since swimmers get up to 90-percent of their power from their arms, he needed to rely on a strong breaststroke kick to make it work. He trained by swimming up to 37 miles per week with his wrists restricted. A kayaker followed him during the swim and gave him electrolyte drinks every hour, while his sister nervously held the key to his handcuffs on a nearby boat.
