DW: Take THAT Chick-fil-a!
If you could, would you be immortal? How about if you were a cow? Scientists have made a big discovery that could help make lab-grown beef much cheaper and easier to produce. For the first time, researchers found that cow cells can naturally become "immortal," meaning they keep dividing forever without needing any genetic changes. This goes against what scientists thought before the discovery, when they believed cow cells could only do this through gene editing.
The breakthrough happened at Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Believer Meats, where researchers watched cow cells naturally turn on their own renewal systems over time. Why does this matter? With these naturally immortal cells, scientists think they can now produce lab-grown beef at prices similar to regular beef without safety concerns from genetic modifications.
