Potential Buyers Are Pushing To "Sleep Over" At Homes Before They Buy Them

DW: BUT NO UPPER DECKERS!

It makes a kind of sense…but it’s still strange. A new real estate trend lets shoppers stay overnight, or even for weeks, in homes they're hoping to buy. A California couple rented a $60 million Newport Coast estate for two months at $250,000 per month to see what life inside would be like. Others across markets like New York and Texas are trying shorter stays.

Some agents let buyers test lighting, check noise levels, and get a feel for how utilities work. Sellers say it’s like test‑driving a luxury car, but others worry about privacy or potential damage. Yet when it works, those sleepovers can turn interest into a sale faster than a short walkthrough ever could. As the real estate market continues to change, this might not be the last “strange” idea that takes off.
