A 55-year-old father of six from Rampur, India stunned his relatives by running off with his 22-year-old son’s bride-to-be…and the family’s life savings. Shakeel had pushed hard to marry off his 17-year-old son to Ayesha, but while “planning” the ceremony, he visited her alone and apparently fell victim to Cupid’s arrow. Last month, he phoned home from Delhi to say he’d married Ayesha himself. Shakeel’s wife, Shabbana, says Shakeel emptied more than $2,400 in cash and took the household’s gold jewelry before vanishing.
She had long suspected an affair, showing their son incriminating texts, but when she confronted Shakeel, he allegedly became abusive. Local police note that a theft of that amount can bring up to three years in jail, yet no formal complaint has been filed, so they can’t act. As Shabbana told Indian journalists, “The woman who was supposed to be my daughter-in-law has now become my husband’s wife,” which is a unique sentence to say in any country.
