Researchers Smelled Egyptian Mummies And Said It Was "Pleasant"

DW: Hey researchers! I've got a couple fingers you can sniff if you are that hard up!

When you have an ancient Egyptian mummy, why not take a big whiff? A group of researchers did, and it wasn’t musty. Instead, they picked up sweet and spicy scents from the ancient oils, waxes, and balms used in mummification. These ingredients weren’t just for preserving the bodies...they also added fragrance to the process, making the burial a more pleasant experience.

Ancient Egyptians believed in preparing the body for the afterlife, and apparently, that included keeping things smelling fresh. This discovery gives scientists new insight into how much thought and care went into their burial rituals.
