DW: What would be a hurtful elephant nickname? Limp nose?
The next obvious step is to find out what those names are. Researchers from Colorado State University used machine learning to study 470 unique noises recorded of elephants in Kenya. The study revealed that the tones and rumbles of the elephants changed depending on which member of their herd they were communicating with, so the scientists tried a test.
The scientists played the sounds to the herds, and the elephants being called responded to their sounds. The study says the experiment suggests that elephants are capable of abstract thinking, and makes elephants one of only a few species that use names for each other.
