DW: The big question: Will this make the rest stops cleaner?
Self-driving big rigs are already cruising the highways of North Texas. In the little town of Palmer, Texas, a company called Aurora Innovation has been testing these autonomous behemoths for the past three years. Using advanced tech like 25 cameras and sensors, the company has revealed operators are on board mainly to serve as overseers and they almost never intervene.
While Aurora aims to have completely empty cabs on Texas roads by the end of this year, there are some lingering concerns over how these self-driving cars perform in bad weather. Though winning over the public remains a challenge, those for self-driving trucks say it could revolutionize the shipping industry by slashing costs and improving efficiency.
