Whether it’s "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" or “Ghostbusters,” New Yorkers aren't strangers to seeing their town flooded with green ooze onscreen. However, what looks like fluorescent green sludge is currently oozing out of manholes and sewers and onto New York City streets... and people are pretty freaked out.
As terrifying as it looks though, a likely source for the green goo is probably courtesy of experts dealing with the city’s plumbing. A disclaimer on the original X (Twitter) post reads states, "This is water full of green dye. Plumbers frequently use harmless, fluorescent green dye to detect leaks in plumbing and sewage systems." Meanwhile, the National Park Service says, "dye tracing" is also used to "help scientists visualize how water moves from one place to another." As long as it’s not ectoplasm…
