Company Introduces "Car Condoms" To Help Vehicles Float During Flooding

DW: AND you won't have an unwanted little cars running around...

A Japanese company is seeing growing interest in an unusual way to protect cars from flooding: plastic covers that let vehicles float instead of becoming submerged. The SAM-CS system uses two sheets of plastic, one beneath the car and another over the top, to keep floodwater out. It takes about 10 minutes to set up, and optional straps help keep the floating vehicle from drifting away or hitting something.

The system costs about $560 for a midsize car. Its maker, Onoda Sangyo, developed the product in 2024 but initially received only about two inquiries a month, but after severe flooding in Chiba damaged an estimated 10-thousand vehicles, interest jumped to 30 inquiries in just two weeks. Some people online have questioned how well the system would work during an actual flood, but sales continue.
