Construction workers in Belgium got the surprise of their lives when they uncovered a hidden treasure worth more than $10-million during a renovation. The crew was installing a sewer system at a former brewery in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, about a 40-minute drive from Brussels, when they found dozens of gold bars and hundreds of coins stashed inside a wooden chest behind a wall. An 18-year-old student worker named Kobe said their first reaction was disbelief, since they obviously didn’t expect to find gold.
The site manager, with 33 years in construction, said it was a first for him, and police are now holding the loot while they investigate who it belongs to. A historian speculated it may have belonged to a local brewer family; under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the fortune. The find has drawn crowds of would-be treasure hunters, prompting police to warn people to stay away.
