DW: Every day can be an adventure!
A 75-year-old South African politician made a splash, literally, when she put on a wetsuit, snorkel, and pink swimming cap and paddled through a large muddy trench in the middle of a Johannesburg street to make a point about the city's crumbling infrastructure. Helen Zille, a former leader of South Africa's second-largest political party and former mayor of Cape Town, is now running for mayor of Johannesburg.
The water-filled trench she waded through was caused by a burst pipe that had gone unrepaired for about three years despite multiple attempts. Zille posted a video of herself in the trench, joking about looking for fish, and it was quickly picked up by television news channels. The stunt appears to have worked: the city's current mayor said the pipe was finally fixed and the hole was filled within a day of her swim.
