Another year, another complaint about the world’s most famous groundhog. PETA is once again calling for Punxsutawney Phil to be retired, this time offering to replace the famous groundhog with a giant 3D hologram. The animal rights group sent a letter to Groundhog Club President Tom Dunkel offering to provide the state-of-the-art projection, complete with vocal weather predictions, if Phil and his family are sent to a sanctuary. Ingrid Newkirk argued that groundhogs are shy animals who fear loud noises and crowds and aren't willing participants in the annual spectacle.
PETA has previously suggested replacing Phil with an animatronic groundhog, a gold coin, and even a human volunteer. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro responded on social media with a photo of Phil and the words "DONT TREAD ON ME." His office confirmed he's serious about defending the state's beloved rodent.
