Civil Servant Cashes Paychecks For 10 Years Without Going To Work

DW: Why don't I ever find jobs like this on Indeed?

A civil servant in Kuwait was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of over $1-million for collecting his salary for 10 years without going to work. The man worked in the citizens' service department but didn't show up or do any work for a decade, even though his paycheck kept getting deposited into his bank account every month. After someone discovered what was happening, authorities charged him with unlawful enrichment and abuse of public funds.

Two other courts had found him not guilty, but a Kuwait court overturned those decisions, saying the evidence against him was clear. Along with prison time, he has to pay back the $339,000 in salary he collected, plus double that amount as a penalty, bringing the total amount to just over a million. The sentence is one of the strongest ever given in Kuwait for salary fraud and comes as the country tries to crack down on government corruption and people taking advantage of the system.
