Now A Japanese Political Party's Installing An AI As It's Leader

DW: First I was upset, then thought, it can't be any worse than the real thing.

A small Japanese political party called Path to Rebirth announced it will be led by artificial intelligence after its founder quit following terrible election results. The party was started by Shinji Ishimaru, a former small-city mayor who surprised everyone by coming in second place in the Tokyo governor's race last year. However, the party has been a complete failure at winning actual seats, losing all 42 candidates in the Tokyo assembly election and all 10 candidates in the upper house election this summer.

After these losses, Ishimaru quit and the party held a contest to pick a new leader. The winner was Koki Okumura, a 25-year-old PhD student studying AI at Kyoto University, who says he'll just be an assistant to the real leader, which will be artificial intelligence. The party doesn't have any set policies and lets members create their own agendas. The AI won't control what party members do politically but will help with things like deciding how to distribute resources. Details about how the AI will actually work haven't been figured out yet.
