A 33-year-old woman, known as Ms. A, went to the Plastic Surgery Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences to treat a condition called hemifacial atrophy, which made the left side of her face shrink and her eye appear sunken. During surgery to improve her facial symmetry, doctors found five contact lenses stuck behind her left eyeball.
Ms. A had been wearing contact lenses for years and had lost several recently, not realizing they were trapped behind her eye. Fortunately, she didn't experience any problems from the stuck lenses, but leaving them there could have led to infections or eye injuries.
