Pub Charges Diners For Food Left On Their Plates

DW: Is England trying to catch up to the US's obesity levels?

A pub in Cornwall, England called "The Star Inn at Vogue," has gone viral for charging diners an extra fee for leaving an "excessive" amount of food on their plates during their "eat as much as you like" buffet for $15. The customers were surprised to see a $3 charge per person added to their bill, despite clear signage at the buffet station warning against food waste.

Pub owner Mark Graham explained, "I don't care about a couple of potatoes getting left. It's just stupid, excessive waste that bothers me," he stated. The fee, he explained, helps cover the cost of raw materials.

The pub clarified that diners can go back for seconds, emphasizing it's not about making extra money but preventing waste. On social media, reactions were mixed, but many praised the move as a smart way to stop people from wasting things. One customer wrote, "What a great idea...clearly this is a ridiculous amount of food to waste." Others disagreed, with someone posting, "You shouldn't have to pay more because you couldn't quite eat it."
