People Discover How Dirty Knife Blocks Are — And It's 'Making Them Sick'

DW: Out of sight, out of mind...excuse me, potty time.

One man, known online as @howdirtyis, has been causing a stir by revealing some of the grossest corners of our living spaces. He swabs common household surfaces and then cultivates any bacteria present in a petri dish to show just how dirty things really are.

One of his followers asked him to test the slots on a knife block. He swabbed deep into a slot of a wooden knife block and spread it across a petri dish. "After you clean the knife, you put it in its nice little holder. But how dirty is that hole? Did I phrase that strangely?" he captioned the video. After a few days, the bacterial colonies that grew were described as nothing short of "gross."

TikTok users were left "feeling sick" as they reacted in the comments. One user admitted, "I almost regret asking! Thank you," while another questioned, "But for real... how are we supposed to clean it AND why have I never even thought to ask??!!!" Someone else suggested, "I see a magnetic knife block in your future." Wooden knife blocks can trap moisture and food particles, leading to bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus growing inside. Experts recommend regular cleaning and drying to minimize bacterial growth.
