DW: Number 367 why I will never go to Alabama.
Because the sharks of today aren’t terrifying enough…Scientists in Alabama have discovered a species of shark with “fangs” that was an apex predator 65 million years ago. Apparently, 17 teeth had been collecting dust at the Geological Survey in Wilcox County where they’d been sitting for over 100 years.
The shark is called Palaeohypotodus bizzocoi and was estimated to be around 10 feet long. T. Lynn Harrell, Jr., a paleontologist and fossil collections curator at the Geological Survey, is excited about the find, saying, “Shark discoveries like this one give us tremendous insights into how ocean life recovers after major extinction events and also allow us to potentially forecast how global events, like climate change, affect marine life today.”
