Study Says Workers Who Use Emojis In Emails Have Less ‘Power’

A study recently conducted at Tel Aviv University shows that workers who use emojis and other graphics in their emails were seen as less authoritative and that using them “signals low power.” The study was aimed at answering the theory that the use of images in emails influences the perception of employees at work.

Why do pictures and emojis mean “low power?” According to the study, it’s because using graphics shows that people want “social proximity,” something that other research shows is desired more by less powerful people. The result? “When you want to signal power, think twice before sending an emoji or a picture.”
