A large-scale search remains underway for Jason Coughran, a 60-year-old hiker who has been missing for over a week in the Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe, California. Coughran set out for a Memorial Day hike on Monday (May 25) and was last seen near Angora Peak around 11 a.m., according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. He has not been heard from since that afternoon.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the search for Coughran involves nearly 200 personnel, including volunteers and first responders from more than twenty counties and agencies. Teams are using helicopters, drones, K9 units, and cellphone forensics to comb the rugged, mountainous terrain of the Desolation Wilderness, which covers nearly 64,000 acres of alpine forest and lakes.
The operation is being coordinated by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office with support from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services. On Thursday (May 30), about 80 volunteers were flown into the wilderness by a National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter, while another 60 entered by vehicle. Fifty searchers remained overnight to continue efforts, according to a report by KTVN.
Coughran is described as a white male, six feet two inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He may have been wearing khaki shorts and a long-sleeved white and blue shirt.
Rescue teams face significant challenges, including inclement weather, difficult terrain, and limited access to some areas. Authorities have focused recent searches on the areas around Half Moon Lake, Clyde Lake, and Gilmore Lake.
Anyone with information on Coughran’s whereabouts is urged to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office at 530-573-3051 or 530-621-6600. As the search continues, officials and volunteers express hope for a safe outcome.
