From ABC 13 - WSET:

After months of scrutiny and legal troubles, the Natural Bridge Zoo has announced that the zoo has new ownership and that their elephant Asha has been retired.

According to a Facebook Post from the zoo Thursday morning, there are going to be some dramatic changes made around the zoo.

"The park will be operating from a different approach. The facility has gone under new ownership and management," Natural Bridge Zoo said. "Dramatic changes have been made to introduce a more innovative and interactive experience."

One of the most visibly apparent dramatic changes will be the absence of their elephant, Asha.

Asha has been the face of scandals at the zoo over the years, including a 2015 report that alleged animal abuse against the elephant.

"We are pleased to announce that our beloved Asha the elephant has been retired to a sanctuary!" the zoo said.

The zoo exploded into national headlines in December 2023, when Zeus, the white tiger at the zoo, was euthanized and dozens of animals seized from the property.

Since then, the zoo's owners have gone to court multiple times, battling the Virginia Attorney General's Office over the situation.

Natural Bridge Zoo said their 2024 season is starting Memorial Day weekend with updated hours.
