"Cocaine Hippo" Struck By Car In Colombia

DW: What's next? Mongooses on meth? Oh, they already have that, it's called West Virginia.

One of Pablo Escobar’s “cocaine hippos” has been killed in a car crash on a Colombian highway. Turns out the animal was struck a few miles away from the drug lord’s estate, where he apparently smuggled three female hippos and one male hippo in the 1980s. Those four then became 150 hungry, hungry hippos and have since wreaked havoc in the surrounding area.

The mammals, who have no natural predators, used to roam Escobar’s 7,000-acre property but have since spread out, becoming an “invasive species”. While many think hunting the hippos to cull the population is the answer, the government has decided to spend $3.5 million to capture and move them to sanctuaries in India and Mexico.
