Winter Weather to Arrive in Two Waves Thursday and Friday Mornings

From ABC 13 - WSET Meteorologist Will Stafford:

For Thursday: Parts of our area are under a Winter Weather Advisory.

Thursday will be the start of our first bout with winter, with the temperatures being the strongest punch from this blast with old man winter.

In the morning, pre-sunrise and lasting until about lunch, we could see some isolated pockets of freezing rain in addition to the liquid rain that most will see.

Winter precip should be confined to the higher elevations and areas west of Roanoke.

This may cause a glaze of ice on elevated surfaces and perhaps some tricky travel for the morning commute but by afternoon we warm above freezing and then it’s just a cold raw rain.

Friday we’ll start off with rain and a quick burst of snow and then the front crosses the area.

Highs on Friday will be reached before sunrise and then they tank through the day.

Precipitation on Friday will likely end as a period of snow, but accumulation outside the mountains and far western sections of our area look minimal.

Wind gusts could top 50 mph on Friday as temperatures plummet from the 40s to the single digits.
