Study: Paying Obese People To Lose Weight Doubles Their Rate of Fat Loss

DW: They needed a study for this?

Researchers took 668 morbidly obese adults in New York City and Los Angeles with losing 10 pounds in six months, and they offered some of them cash if they hit their goal. The results show that half of the people that were given a cash reward hit their target, but only 22 percent of the ones that didn’t have cash as a reward lost the weight.

All of the study participants were put into a weekly local weight management program meeting and given a one-year membership to the WW Freestyle weight loss program. The ones offered cash could earn up to $750 over the course of the study and lost an average of 10.6 pounds. Dr. Melanie Jay says“Any kind of incentive can work.”
