A study published yesterday in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology says they’ve discovered why people get more colds in the winter. The study found that cold air weakens the immune response of the body, and especially weakens it in the nose.

Researchers say that dropping the temperature inside the nose by nine degrees kills off almost half of the virus and bacteria-fighting cells in the nose. Dr. Benjamin Bleier said, “Cold air is associated with increased viral infection because you’ve essentially lost half of your immunity just by that small drop in temperature.”
