Alison Winterburn was diagnosed with encephalitis, a virus that causes inflammation of the brain, in 2012. Despite taking medication to get rid of it, she was left with scarring on the frontal lobe of her brain. Now, 10 years after her diagnosis, Winterburn says she still has trouble understanding that it’s not the 1970s.
She says she had to relearn who she was and was shocked to see a middle-aged woman in the mirror. The biggest shock caused her husband to stop buying the newspaper because she was “horrified by the inflated prices.” She continues to struggle with memory problems today.
