Henry Co. man charged with murder after strangling wife, staging break-in

The Henry County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that a man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife.

Lorene Hopkins-Pequignot, was found dead inside her home at 4436 Longview Drive in January 2018.

They said Richard Pequignot, 71, of Stuart was taken into custody Tuesday after a Henry County jury reviewed evidence that led to him.

According to the sheriff, Lorene Hopkins-Pequignot died of manual strangulation.

Officials said Richard Pequignot called 911 around 6:57 p.m. on January 12, 2018 to report that his home had been broken into and that he could not find his wife.

They said deputies arrived to the scene and found Lorene Hopkins-Pequignot's body.

The sheriff said while working the crime scene and collecting evidence, it became apparent that the home had been staged to appear like a breaking and entering had taken place.
