One In 14 People Would Rather Lick A Sidewalk Than Give Up Phone For A Week

DW: I think that's the new T-Mobile promotion...or is it Verizon?

A new survey shows just how attached people are to their phones, and the results are pretty wild. Google searches for "phone addiction signs" jumped 461-percent in the past year. When asked what they'd give up before going a week without their phone in a survey by tech recycler Compare and Recycle, two-fifths of people said caffeine. Almost a quarter would skip seeing anyone for a week. One in seven would shave off an eyebrow, and 18-percent would stop showering.

The big one? One in fourteen people said they'd rather lick a public sidewalk than lose their phone for seven days. Gen Z showed the strongest attachment, with some willing to walk on hot coals, jump from a plane, or get a tattoo chosen by a stranger. Phone addiction is now tied to an anxiety disorder called "nomophobia." Experts say we've developed an unhealthy bond with our devices and suggest using tools like Google's Digital Wellbeing to track and limit screen time.
