The Newest Craze Among Japanese Youth...Tooth Tattoos

DW: Would this make going to the dentist a little cooler?

Trends come and go, and there’s no limit on “weirdness” for new ones. A new trend is growing among young people in China who are getting tattoos on their teeth instead of their skin. These tooth tattoos aren't actually tattooed directly on teeth, which would be harmful. Instead, they're designs printed on crowns using 3D technology that go over real teeth. People like them because they can be changed easily by replacing the crown, unlike skin tattoos that are permanent.

Popular designs include partners' initials, lucky numbers, or phrases like "making money" that are supposed to bring good fortune. Some dental clinics now offer tooth tattoos as a free bonus when people get crowns. However, some dentists warn against the practice because carving designs into crowns can make them weaker and wear out faster.
