DW: Hey! I've been doing fine for YEARS! Stop worrying....
Aleysha Ortiz, a 19-year-old from Hartford, Connecticut, is suing her former high school after graduating with honors despite being unable to read or write. Born in Puerto Rico, Aleysha moved to the U.S. at age 5 and faced learning challenges early on. She struggled with letter, sound, and number recognition as early as first grade, but her difficulties were not adequately addressed by the school system.
Aleysha graduated with honors from Hartford Public High School in June 2024 and received a scholarship to the University of Connecticut. She relied on assistive technologies, such as text-to-speech and speech-to-text apps, to complete assignments. Her lawsuit against the Hartford Board of Education, the City of Hartford, and Santiago alleges negligence and seeks accountability for the school's failure to address her learning disabilities.
