An Edmore, Michigan man was astonished to learn that a rock he had been using as a doorstop for decades is actually a meteorite valued at $100,000. The man received the rock in 1988 from a farmer when he bought property in Edmore, Michigan. The farmer had found the meteorite after witnessing it crash to Earth in the 1930s and had kept it for years.
Unaware of its true value, the man used it to prop open doors until he recently decided to have it appraised. Geologist Monaliza Sirbescu from Central Michigan University confirmed its rarity, identifying it as an iron-nickel meteorite—12% nickel, a high concentration for such meteorites. Sirbescu explained, “It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically.”
Now named the Edmore meteorite (after the area it fell in), it holds significant scientific value, being a small piece of the early solar system. For 30 years, the man had not only used it as a doorstop but also allowed his children to bring it to school for show and tell.
