DW: Yeah, I really don't give a cluck...
Clucking fascinating! New research finds that humans can tell what kind of a mood a chicken is in by the way it clucks. How in the heck does this work? Researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of Lincoln created an online questionnaire comprised of sound clips of 12 brown hens before and after they received a treat.
Turns out that nearly three-quarters of the 200 participants were able to correctly identify whether the chickens were in a happy or “fowl” mood. Those conducting the experiment hope this work could lead to computer systems that monitor coups for signs of distress and help give the animals a higher quality of life.
