So many people are feeling lonely and burnt out in Japan that there’s a rise in the popularity of websites offering fake girlfriends and boyfriends for rent. One website offering the service is called tokyo.rent-kano.net and says you can rent a girlfriend for $80 for two hours who “makes bread and sweets and watches anime' on her days off.”
A YouTuber who tried the service – and shelled out $400 – calls it “the most ridiculous, expensive date I've ever had - but we enjoyed it and it's still cheaper than having an actual girlfriend.” Each of these sites make it clear, however, that they’re selling companionship…and nothing more.
