DW: I had to get one poo story before the end of the week. If I get it out of my system now (every pun intended) my wife will let me sleep in the bed this weekend!
It’s time for some people to take a poo-pill. Doctors are recruiting volunteers for a fecal transplant trial…all in the name of science, of course. The point of this stinky study is to find out whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can help treat people with cirrhosis of the liver. So, how do you take’em? The “crapsules,” as researchers have dubbed them, are made up of freeze-dried feces from volunteer donors. The goal is to see if FMT can prevent the infections that can come with cirrhosis.
Apparently, these poo-pills are nothing new. This type of therapy has been around since 1958 and has been used in the past to research its effects on Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and even as an anti-aging treatment.
