LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Dozens of people gathered Sunday to show their support for the family and friends of Iron & Ale after a shooting killed one of their own on Friday night.
The son of one of the owners, 28-year-old Tyler Johnson, was shot and killed Friday night inside the restaurant.
The alleged shooter, 31-year-old Derek Lewis, fled the scene and was arrested at Jacksonville International Airport in Florida on Saturday.
Cary McFadden, one of the restaurant's owners, says the support from the community means everything.
"We never imagined in a million years the way people truly felt about us," McFadden said.
"Tyler was an amazing young man," she said. "He welcomed people, he loved people. He was a kind, kind young man."
She said that he'll never be forgotten and that he'll always be a part of the restaurant.
Lewis was taken into custody Saturday afternoon at the Jacksonville International Airport without incident and is being held in Florida pending extradition proceedings.
He is charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and concealed weapon.
