Teen Abstained From Social Media For Six Years Wins Prize From His Mother

Sivert Klefsaas was offered an interesting bet by his mother when he was 12…to stay off social media for six years, and he would be compensated $1,800.

Not only did Sivert win the challenge, he actually enjoyed it. Sivert's mother was inspired by a separate social media challenge called the "16 for 16", where a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media. She decided to add a few years to the calendar and then shook her son's hand.

"I wouldn't say there was ever a time where I thought I was about to break," Sivert says. "I got to avoid all the unnecessary drama that was on there," he continues. Without all the distractions, Sivert could put all his focus on sports and academics. Likewise, Sivert's mother was confident the experiment would give her son a newfound perspective on how to avoid getting sucked into all the unnecessary detriments social media can provoke.
